Flood Damage sparks electrical safety concerns

flood damage

Fortunately most people know that water and electricity do not mix. This means that most of us have the sense not touch wiring with wet hands, and understand the potential implications of doing so. Despite this, due to the recent heavy rain and localised flooding in Brisbane the National Electrical and Communications Association has issued a warning to residents affected by flooding to have their electrical systems checked and possibly repaired before turning the power back on.

At Bevan Robinson Electrical we strongly endorse this advice, especially when your home has been affected by flooding or water damage. In today’s post we give our advice when it comes to water damage and electricity, including what to look out for, and what you can do to minimise the risk of fire and electrical shock.

What can I do to reduce risk before flooding or water damage occurs?

Unplugging all appliances and placing them on raised surfaces to minimise any contact with water or rain. Also make sure the power cord is also raised off the ground and not trailing where it could come into contact with water. If there are any leaks in your roof, avoid using lights in the same area as the leak and move any appliances away from the source of the leak to prevent water damage.

What should I do if my home has received water damage or flooding?

With any flooding event residents in affected areas should always have the electrical safety of their home inspected by an electrical contractor. They will provide verification tests on switchboards, appliances and wiring in the home and present you with a certificate to ensure that your property is electrically safe. If your power has been disconnected from your service provider as a precaution, they will connect the power as soon as possible after receiving the okay from your electrician. The team at Bevan Robinson Electrical can help with this.

Remember: Never attempt to do any of your own electrical work on appliances or switchboards at any time, but especially after they may have received water damage. Instead have peace of mind and assurance from the team who are trained in electricity, and electrical safety.
